PERIA 2011: Regional Innovation Agencies meet in Europe

Veneto Innovazione took part to the 1st European conference dedicated to the Regional Innovation Agencies was held in Reims (France) on March 29th, 2011.
The event, hosted by CARINNA, the Champagne-Ardenne Research and Innovation Agency, was organised in the framework of PERIA project, funded by Interreg IVC programme. It was attended by numerous Regional Innovations Agencies across Europe.
The aim of the event was to provide a platform for diverse regional innovation systems in Europe by gathering experts from different countries to share their views and experiences on the regional innovation system and its influence on regional innovation and cooperation at European level.

The contributions from stakeholders and participants stressed the idea that SMEs and research labs are often not comfortable with existing collaboration tools developed at regional level and, while the creation of new services seems unnecessary, an efficient reorganization of existing tools is highly desirable. Moreover, a fair balance between the inward-looking local system and the openness to external information exchange is an inescapable fact for facing the global challenge of innovation, both at European and at international level. Regional innovation agencies are not expected to merge towards a unique model but, taking into high consideration needs and ideas coming from local companies and research stakeholders, they have to adapt to the specificities of their Region.
Tracing the future of innovation policy at regional level, Mr. Reinhard Büscher from DG Enterprise (European Commission) stressed the relevance of the social innovation, which has to be user-driven and it has to solve societal challenges, bringing together all relevant actors, the owner of the problem and the solution provider.
Two workshops focused on policy makers and regional innovation actors, presenting on one side different regional innovation systems and concrete case studies on the other one. In particular, the experience of Okode (spin-off from the Ciudad Politécnica de la Innovaciòn de Valencia designing mobile technology and applications for Real Time Visualization) was presented as a successful case of a highly innovative company created with the support of the Scientific Park of Valencia, the University of Valencia and Impiva, the regional innovation agency of the Valencian Region.
