FITMAN - A project for Future Internet (FI) technologies

FITMAN is a FI-PPP Phase II project, developing and applying Future Internet (FI) technologies to manufacturing industries. Within the project, the technologies have been applied to 10 industry-led use case trials in the domains of Smart, Digital and Virtual Factories of the Future. The technologies are now available to other participants, who can apply for funding to participate in Phase III of the FI-PPP programme!
The 10 use case trials (4 conducted by Large Enterprises, 6 by SMEs) test and assess the suitability, openness and flexibility of FIWARE Generic Enablers (GEs) while contributing to the STEEP (social-technological-economical-environmental-political) sustainability of EU Manufacturing Industries. The use case trials belong to several manufacturing sectors such as automotive, aeronautics, white goods, furniture, textile/clothing, LED lighting, plastic, construction, and manufacturing assets management.
FITMAN offers 3 reference platforms and 15 Specific Enablers (SEs). These are not limited to just manufacturing scenarios. For example, the Virtual Factory Platform is essentially a business collaboration platform and some SEs are relevant to domains such as 3D printing, including the 3DScan SE (for image analysis, visualisation and management) and the 3D Web Viewer SE (for collaborative editing of 3D virtual scenes). FITMAN also offers non-technical assets, such as a Verification and Validation Framework. It also offers a Phase III Package, which provides information and access to both technical and non-technical FITMAN assets, as well as support services. FITMAN Specific Enablers
FITMAN provides 15 Specific Enablers (SEs), each of which is currently used in multiple FITMAN trials. These SEs cover a wide range of domains within IT for manufacturing, from management of virtualised assets to dynamic complex event processing and semantic matching.

FITMAN Platforms
The FITMAN platforms have been designed carefully with respect to the requirements from the FITMAN use case trials and a comprehensive analysis of the functionality offered by the FIWARE GEs. The result is three platforms that comprise a combination of FIWARE GEs and FITMAN SEs to address the core challenges in each of the Smart, Virtual and Digital Factories of the Future.
Smart Factory Platform: This platform is built for dealing with the optimisation of production processes (in terms of production cost, energy efficiency, production reliability, production machine usage, etc.) via the monitoring and management of the production process and its components. It aims to collect information from the shop floor to support real time decision making, exploiting the data collected and to improve predictive maintenance by monitoring the machinery.

Digital Factory Platform: This platform is intended to facilitate quick and cost effective development of innovative services and applications that connect people (blue collar workers, engineers, production engineers and white collar workers) with the information required to perform their tasks. The platform is specifically intended to provide support in the development of advanced and 3D visualisation services and applications.
Virtual Factory Platform: This platform can be seen as a business collaboration platform, where actors of the virtual enterprise can collaborate among themselves in order to achieve business goals. In this sense, it is addressing challenges not limited to manufacturing. The key functionality provided by this platform includes tangible and intangible asset management and collaborative business process execution.

Getting access to FITMAN assets and support
Access to FITMAN technologies and support can be gained in the FI-PPP Phase III, via open calls that are launched by FIWARE Accelerators. This is a unique opportunity to receive funding for putting novel business ideas into practice! There is €80 million in direct funding available, including mentoring and networking opportunities.
There are 16 accelerator projects in different areas. There are 3 accelerators related to manufacturing, FABulous, CEED Tech and FInish. More information about their open calls and the other accelerators can be found online: http://www.fi-ware.org/accelerators/
